Bryan High School graduate and standout athlete Nic Scourton – formerly Nic Caraway while attending Bryan schools – is returning home! On Jan. 4, 2024, Scourton officially announced that he would be transferring from Purdue University to play football for the Texas A&M Aggies.
Scourton called it a surreal moment.
Scourton was a consensus 3-star recruit when he graduated from Bryan in 2022. During his time as a Viking, Scourton was named a first team all-district player twice and was selected to participate in the 2022 All-American Bowl, which features the nation’s top 100 high school players.
The elite defender served as a team captain while playing at Purdue in West Lafayette, Indiana. He said coming home to Aggieland is a dream come true for him.
“I’m excited to come back and represent Bryan and further my career at A&M,” Scourton said.
In his final two seasons of high school, Scourton recorded 136 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, eight sacks and five forced fumbles, while also playing basketball for the Vikings. This year, as a sophomore at Purdue, Scourton finished the season with 10 sacks, which tied him for the most in the Big 10 Conference.
“This is a great success story coming forward,” former Bryan Head Football Coach Ross Rogers said.
Scourton counts Rogers and Bryan High School Principal Lane Buban as key influences during his time as a Viking.
“Bryan taught me so many lessons, so many great coaches came through that program,” he said. “Mr. Buban, Coach Ross Rogers, they basically set me up to be successful in college.”
Rogers said he can understand how Scourton became a captain at Purdue so early in his career, saying, “He gravitates toward people.”
Scourton attended Bryan ISD from seventh grade through high school graduation. He will be a sophomore at Texas A&M and plans to study Agribusiness. He reports to Texas A&M at the start of the spring semester in January.
“I’m excited to be around 103,000 people,” he said about playing in Aggieland again, “and to be able to, you know, be closer to family and friends and people who support.”
“A lot of us from the Bryan ISD are excited to see a player of his impact come back and to get the Aggies to where we want to be going forward,” Rogers said.
